Summary |
DVD copy of Erkki Määttänen's film, Toivola - Land of Hope -- "In the USA, in North Michigan, there is a village called Toivola. The region was populated by Finns at the turn of the twentieth century. The protagonist of the documentary, Martin Johnson, was born in Toivola and speaks fluent Finnish, although he has never been to Finland. With the assistance of Martin and his friends we are introduced to the Finnish American way of life in regions where the Finnish ancestry is like a tattoo; it won't dissovle easily into the majority culture. Besides Toivola, the story is also filmed in Minneapolis and Duluth, Minnesota." |
